JOB DESCRIPTION
NYC Citizen Corps is New York City Emergency Management’s (NYCEM) community engagement network. It is made up of non-profit, faith-based, government, and community based organizations dedicated to using their collective resources to promote emergency preparedness, community-based planning, and response throughout the city. NYC Citizen Corps is seeking an outreach coordinator to support the development and growth of NYCEM’s faith and community-based programming using the following strategies:

 Coordinate NYC Emergency Management’s outreach strategy to faith-based organizations, houses of worship, community-based organizations, and networks that may benefit from Citizen Corps programming and support.
 Increase engagement with new and existing Citizen Corps partners to build new and sustain existing community emergency networks. Use these networks to strengthen local emergency planning efforts.
 Work with existing partners and networks to better understand needs or gaps in existing programming. Develop tools and trainings that meet these needs and build the capacity of community based organizations and houses of worship to prepare for and respond to emergencies.
 Plan and conduct special events including conferences and outreach campaigns.
 Work closely with NYCEM’s Human Services Unit and other divisions to connect with their planning efforts with the non-profit and faith based sector.
 Serve as NYCEM’s External connection to community based organizations and houses of worship.


The selected candidate will be expected to work non-traditional hours to meet the job’s needs including some weekends and evenings.

The selected candidate will be required to staff the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during emergency activations and work during non-business hours during emergencies. The selected candidate will also participate in drills and exercises, and will assist with Ready New York presentations to external groups.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. A master’s degree from an accredited college in emergency management, public administration, urban planning, engineering, economics, political science, the physical sciences or related field and one year of satisfactory full-time professional experience in one or a combination of the following: emergency management, fire, police, or military service, public safety, public health, public administration, urban planning, engineering, or another specialized area to which the appointment is to be made; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in the areas listed in “1” above; or

3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state’s department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and six years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in the areas listed in “1” above, at least two years of which must have been in one of those areas, or another specialized area to which the appointment is to be made.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. PREFERRED SKILLS

The Citizen Corps Outreach Coordinator position requires a creative individual who has demonstrated excellent community development and communication skills as well as cultural and religious literacy. The position requires someone who has a working knowledge of New York City and has shown commitment to developing community resiliency and working with vulnerable populations. Knowledge of at least one foreign language recommended.
