Free Home Based....CME/CEU-Accredited Training for Nurses, PT, OT and Speech Language Pathologists

New online training specifically for nurses, OT, PT and Speech Language Pathologists.

On February 12th, Attorney General Maura Healey and Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program announced the launch of  “Serving Those Who Have Served: Practical Approaches to Addressing the Invisible Wounds of War in Post-9/11 Service Members and Veterans Trainings.”   Home Base works to heal the invisible wounds of war for Service Members, Post-9/11 Veterans and their Families through clinical care, wellness, research and education. The purpose of this initiative is to give first responders tools to identify critical issues unique to our veterans and gain basic skills to help them.

For this initiative, Home Base is now offering FREE online, on-demand, trainings in five areas:  post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, substance abuse, identifying suicide risk, and understanding how the unique, post-9/11 military culture impacts care. 

These trainings all include firsthand accounts from Veterans who have faced an invisible wound of war. They were specifically created for health professionals and are accompanied by additional resources

Tax savings over 50

These tax-saving strategies can make saving a little easier as you near retirement. 

  • IRA deduction: If you're 50 and over, you can contribute an additional $1,000 to an IRA
  • 401(k) catch-up contributions: If you're working and 50 or over, you contribute an additional $6,000 tax-deferred to a 401(k). 
  • No early withdrawal penalty for IRA accounts: Once you turn age 59 1/2, you can withdraw money from an IRA for any reason without incurring the 10 percent tax. Income tax will be due on withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts at any age, however.
  • Bigger standard deduction: In 2016, the standard deduction is $7,850, which is $1,550 more, and for married couples the standard deduction increases to $15,100 for married couples age 65 or older. 
  • Higher tax filing threshold: The threshold for being required to file a tax return increases to $11,850 ($23,100 for couples) age 65 and older. 
  • Property tax breaks: You may qualify for property or school tax deferrals or exemptions, depending on where you live and your age and income.
  • Tax on required minimum distributions: Since after age 70 1/2 you are generally required to withdrawal money from traditional retirement accounts and pay the tax or pay a penalty, if you don't need the money, why not give it to charity? If you are retired and at least age 70 1/2, you can transfer any amount up to $100,000 from an IRA to a qualified charity and avoid income tax on the contribution. If you would give a certain amount to a charity anyway, this is one great way to avoid the tax! 
  • HSA contributions: You can transfer $1,000 more a year (a total of $4,350) to a health savings account once you reach age 55 on a high-deductible health plan.
  • Medical expenses: A taxpayer who is under 65 can deduct medical expenses exceeding 10% of their AGI, but once you reach age 65, this threshold decreases to 7.5%. Plus, if you are married, if only one of you is over 65, you both get to use this deduction.

The National Fire Academy is recruiting students for its mediated online course August 28 – September 24, 2016

The course, M0564 – Challenges for the Future III: Health Care and EMS, is a 4 week EMS/healthcare-focused mediated online course designed to explore the impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the evolution of healthcare systems have on their organizations. Students will evaluate the historical formation of modern EMS and the societal safety nets of Social Security and Medicare resulting in the current healthcare system. 

They will evaluate the impact that PPACA has on the emergency services system. Finally, students will evaluate the impact that the PPACA has on the workforce, and consider the implications healthcare innovations will have on their organizations.

The primary audience for this course will include (but not be limited to) experienced company officers and new chief officers.  The secondary audience may be personnel who are involved in the strategic planning process.

Annual 7th Annual National Hmong American Farmers (NHAF) National Conference

Dear Friends of NHAF,

On April 29, 2016 in Fresno, CA at the Ramada Inn located at 324 East Shaw Ave, NHAF will be hosting our Annual 7th Annual NHAF National Conference. Participating will be many of the USDA National State Department Appointees and employees, agency leaders, CBO leadership was well as farmer leader members representing the Hmong, African American, Latino, Filipino and other farming communities. Last year's event included four farmers from Laos. There are many hands on activities designed for the ESL participants including USDA-SNAP-EBT sign up, loan application, programs share, and others.

NHAF is the first Hmong Community Based organization to solely focus its mission on the subject of Farming. As you know the Hmong people settled in the USA after assisting the American's during the Vietnam War. As our first generation parents were scatters across this great land many did not have the educational background, job training skills and spoke English well enough to enter the mainstream workplace and true excel and achieve the American Dream. In the 1980's many, many Hmong families settled in the Central of California, Fresno and began farming on .5-1 acre and since then our Hmong refugees have been feeding the world with the many locally Hmong/Asian Specialty Crop.

NHAF was founded in 2003 as the lone Hmong CBO to assist our community achieve the American Dream through agriculture/farming while assisting the elected officials, USDA and other governmental and CBO better understand the many positive contributions from the Hmong and the Hmong farming community as their have been many misunderstands that have escalated into troublesome times for both parties involve when their intentions are positive

Volunteer Role Players Needed
Persons with Disabilities and Others with Access and Functional Needs for District-wide Emergency Management Exercise



On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, the District will be host to the ‘District of Columbia 2016 Full- Scale Exercise.’ The exercise, which is designed to assess our emergency response capabilities, will simulate a train derailment and hazardous chemical spill. Several District agencies will exercise at multiple locations throughout the city and focus on first response capabilities, activating the District Emergency Operations Center, and conducting shelter operations.

Our goal is to make this exercise as realistic as possible and we would like to make sure that the players are a good representation of our whole community. As a result, we are asking individuals to volunteer as role players on the day of the exercise. These ‘actors’ will portray displaced personnel that need to seek refuge at a shelter.

Our total recruitment goal is 30 volunteer role players for persons with disabilities and others with access and functional needs. No experience required! All role players must be 18 years of age or older. All volunteer role players will receive morning refreshments, lunch, afternoon refreshments and a $45 dollar credit card-style gift card.

Public Health Law and Administrative Communication Internship with CDC’s Public Health Law Program

CDC’s Public Health Law Program (PHLP) is offering the Administrative and Communication Internship/Externship for motivated students enrolled in masters-level programs earning degrees in public health, public policy, public administration, communication, business, or similar disciplines.
With rolling start and completion dates during the academic year, this internship/externship exposes students to high-level strategic planning and other program functions, including marketing, communication, project management, and partner engagement. The internship/externship is 9–14 weeks long in Atlanta, Georgia.

Responsibilities

  • Help write and research breaking stories and relevant commentary for PHLP publications and communications, including Public Health Law News
  • Provide coverage highlights of state and federal congressional hearings, regulatory meetings, and other events driving news about public health
  • Help maintain listservs, communications archives, and PHLP’s website content
  • Help design and execute PHLP’s marketing and communication plans
  • Coordinate webinars and trainings with partner organizations 
Requirements and Skills
  • Currently enrolled in a masters-level public health, public policy, public administration, communication, business, or other related program
  • Excellent communication and time managements skills
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, in a fast-paced environment
Compensation
These internships/externships are unpaid. Internships are not tied to academic credit. Externship and practicum opportunities are available for students seeking academic credit as authorized by law schools or schools of public health.

Remember a 0% rating means 80% of your fight for that disability is over. 

The VA has acknowledged that disability is service connected!!!!!!

Now if it ever worsens provide "EVIDENCE' and if it is in compliance with the regulation that warrants a higher rating you should have no problem. Learn about the Rating tables, and how to read them.

Print out the impairment ratings for your service-connected conditions and be on the lookout for changes in your condition that fit those symptoms.
The VA publishes the Impairment Ratings at 38 CFR Table 4, which is known as the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities. You can find it on the internet by doing a search for 38 CFR Table 4.

Revisit them every year, and file a claim for Increase IF you experience worsening symptoms or limitations.

So don’t despair when you get awarded a 0% award.....

IN THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

Do you know leaders interested in interning at the White House for the Obama Administration?  Encourage them to apply today for the Fall 2016 White House Internship Program – the final internship opportunity in the Obama Administration.  This select group of young men and women from across the country dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community, and the nation.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 18 years of age or older before the first day of the internship, and meet at least one of the following criteria:
·        Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university (two-to-four year institution)
·        Graduated from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university (two-to-four year institution) no more than two years before the first day of the internship
·        A veteran of the United States Armed Forces who possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent and has served on active duty, for any length of time, in the two years preceding the first day of the internship

Every summer since the start of the Obama Administration in 2009, graduating high school seniors from public and charter high schools in the District of Columbia have been invited to apply for a part-time summer internship opportunity at the White House through the D.C. Scholars Program at the White House.
