April 23rd Full-Scale Exercise. WMATA. Washington, D.C. and Vicinity

Volunteer Request: WMATA Emergency Response Exercise

Good Morning Municipal Partners,

On April 23rd, WMATA will conduct a full-scale exercise to provide regional responders and WMATA personnel the opportunity to practice responding to the emergency. 

This is part of an ongoing exercise series aimed at improving emergency response during major incidents. 

Volunteers will act out the role of a community stakeholder on the train at the time of the emergency and will see first-hand how regional emergency responders handle the situation. 

Please share this with your volunteer groups and internal/external partners as appropriate.

Apply to Become a Trainer for the National Emergency Management Basic Academy

EMI is offering a Train-the-Trainer course for the National Emergency Management Basic Academy. To qualify to enroll in the Train-the-Trainer course, individuals must have at least five years of experience working in the field of emergency management and at least three years of experience delivering emergency management instruction to adults.

The entry-point for individuals pursuing a career in emergency management, the Basic Academy offers the tools to develop comprehensive foundational skills. For those who are new to emergency management, the Basic Academy also provides a unique opportunity to build camaraderie, to establish professional contacts, and to understand the roles, responsibilities, and legal boundaries associated with emergency management. 

Course Dates:  August 7-11, 2017
Location:  Emergency Management Institute, National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, MD

MONTHLY. Flood Virtual TableTop Exercise (TTX)

Emergency Management Institute Offers Flood Virtual Tabletop Exercise

FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) Virtual Tabletop Exercise (VTTX) program will offer a flood scenario May 24-25, 2017. The VTTX is designed to help emergency management professionals exercise their response to the impact of major flooding on their community. The VTTX involves key personnel discussing simulated scenarios in an informal setting, and can be used to assess plans, policies, training, and procedures during a flood and inundation challenge.

Each month, EMI conducts a VTTX series using a Video Teleconference (VTC) platform to reach community-based training audiences around the country by providing a virtual forum for interactive disaster training.  The VTTX is designed for a group of ten or more representatives from state, local, tribal, and territorial emergency management communities of practice. It provides a unique opportunity for responders across the nation to simultaneously participate in a hazard-specific, facilitated discussion. Participants will need to connect via a site equipped with the appropriate VTC capability (not Adobe Connect or Face Time-based), but alternate ways to participate are also available upon request.

At BEMA International, we celebrate cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity everyday!

We wanted to share this new resource with you.  

As the U.S. grows more diverse, community based organizations CBOs) are serving an increasingly diverse group of children and families.  In this changing environment, developing cultural competence—behaviors, attitudes, and policies that enable organizations to work effectively in cross-cultural situations—is critical. 


This guide helps users to define and understand cultural competency and identify easily accessible resources for choosing interventions, conducting a needs assessment, selecting appropriate measures and measurement approaches, collaborating with other organizations, ensuring workforce diversity, and budgeting for culturally competent programs.

 Since funders increasingly require evidence that applicants recognize the importance of cultural competence, the resource guide also aims to help better position CBOs to be even more competitive in attracting funding.

 I hope that you find this guide to be useful in your work, and encourage you to share it with others who may be interested.

Food Security, nutrition, and diet are not only issues in other nations, but prevalent here in the U.S.

Farms, and farmers are the key to filling one of our basic needs in under privileged communities globally.  The need for food.

Urban farming in our major cities, and return to our rural ancestral farms in the southern states of the U.S., Central & South America, and the Caribbean are key to our community survival.

Each need our help and support.  We definitely need theirs.

For 35 years, the Association has been on a mission to enhance the quality of life and economic opportunities for rural Mississippi residents through the development of cooperative businesses and other economic strategies.

2.       National Latino Farmers & Ranchers Trade Association  http://www.nlfrta.org/ 
MISSION of the organization is to organize, engage, empower and provide technical assistance to Latino farm and ranching advocacy groups, farmworkers  transitioning into farm ownership, and, generally, small producers, throughout the United States and beyond. NLFRTA provides best practices training workshops on relevant farm and ranching and policy, forums and webinars, and facilitate meetings with state, local and federal elected officials and work with the Congress on the Farm Bill deliberations.

The National Black Farmers Association (NBFA) is a non-profit organization representing African American farmers and their families in the United States. As an association, it serves tens of thousands of members nationwide. NBFA's education and advocacy efforts have been focused on civil rights, land retention, access to public and private loans, education and agricultural training, and rural economic development for black and other small farmers. 

Within the farming sector the ‘brain drain’ is a global predicament, and not isolated to one nation.
