Home Fire Campaign. BEMA International and the American Red Cross.

HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN SAVE LIVES Every eight minutes.

The Black Emergency Managers Association International (BEMA) are partners with the Red Cross to saves lives through the Home Fire Campaign. Home fires kill more people annually than tornadoes and hurricanes combined.

To prevent these tragedies, the Red Cross, volunteers and community partners work together to install free smoke alarms and help families create escape plans.

Through the campaign, the Red Cross and its partners have reached more than 1.6 million people and helped save at least 474 lives across the country by:
  • Installing more than 1.5 million free smoke alarms
  • Making 623,000 households safer from the threat of home fires
  • Reaching more than 1.2 million children through youth preparedness programs

You can help save lives by signing up to become a volunteer or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires. Currently partnered Red Cross chapters and local BEMA  members are encouraged to connect directly. BEMA members that have not previously worked with the Red Cross should go to www.redcross.org and identify their local Red Cross Region.

About the American Red Cross:
  • The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.
  • The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

10 Ways to Stay Safe as You Deck the Halls this Holiday Season

The American Red Cross offers safety tips to help prevent home fires caused by holiday decorations

The holiday season is here, and the American Red Cross wants everyone to stay safe from home fires as they decorate their homes for the upcoming festivities.

Decorations like trees, lights and candles increase the risk of home fires during the holidays—with Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day being the top three days for home candle fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

The Red Cross wants people to stay safe from home fires—the nation’s most frequent disaster—by testing their smoke alarms and practicing their home fire escape plan with free resources at redcross.org/homefires. In addition, you can follow these 10 simple safety tips as you put up lights and ornaments:

1.     Check all holiday light cords to make sure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together—no more than three per extension cord.
2.     If are buying an artificial tree, look for the fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat.
3.     If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it to keep it fresh. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off.
4.     If using older decorations, check their labels. Some older tinsel is lead-based. If using angel hair, wear gloves to avoid irritation. Avoid breathing in artificial snow.
5.     When decorating outside, make sure decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard.
6.     If using a ladder, be extra careful. Make sure to have good, stable placement and wear shoes that allow for good traction.
7.     Don’t use electric lights on metallic trees.
8.     Don’t forget to turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house.
9.     Keep children, pets and decorations away from candles.
10.  If hanging stockings on the fireplace mantel, don’t light the fireplace.

40th Anniversary Founders Dinner at the National Press Club celebrating our 40 Years of Rural Resilience and shared work and that of our members and partners.

Our Forum Program – Our Forum program will be mostly in roundtable format with the ability for interaction and to assure participatory sharing and discussion. We believe there is like to be news on the 2018 Farm Bill just before or while we are at the Forum.  As such, we are stressing that our program timing may change so we can accommodate participation for hill staff and members of Congress whenever they may be available to share the latest Farm Bill news.

Preparing for the Forum

RC Membership – It is that time of year for RC membership renewals.  We are preparing special forum materials listing all our 40th Anniversary members. Therefore, we ask all our RC member organizations to renew their membership in time for the Forum, and no later than Dec. 7. Most memberships are due for renewal; please feel free to contact
danica@ruralco.org to confirm the date of your previous payment.

Organizational Information - We also ask each of our member groups to send us a high-quality version of your organizational logo, today if possible.

Registration – Be sure your entire delegation is registered for the forum and dinner (you can do so at:
https://www.ruralco.org/events/ ).  We have changed our payment provider, so it will not require you to have a PayPal account.  We are also adding an option for those who wish to pay at the door.  We ask you to be sure we have the correct names for each person in your delegation, so we can have name tags prepared and also, so we get an accurate meal count. If you or the members of your delegation have any dietary restrictions or preferences, or allergies, let us know at danica@ruralco.org ASAP.

Remembrances – During our forum Closing Circle on Friday, we will remember all those leaders of our many organizations who have passed on.  Please send us a one-page remembrance with a picture if possible, for leaders and members from your organization it is important for us to honor and remember.

Other Preparation – Do watch the weather reports as you prepare.  At this time of year, it is normally chilly, with rain or other precipitation possible. We will stay within a few block range for most of our forum, but warm clothing and an umbrella are always helpful.  Also, please note that for the Forum days, comfortable business clothing is fine. For the 40th Anniversary Dinner, many of our members enjoy the opportunity to wear something more dressy, but business attire is also welcome. Just be sure to bring your dancing shoes!

If Plans Change or If you Have Travel DifficultiesIf your ticket is booked through our wonderful travel agent, Jerry Feldman, please contact him immediately at
jerry.feldman@casto.com or by phone (831-426-2350 or 831-252-1573).  if you have any difficulties with travel.  In particular, if you are late for a flight be sure to reach him BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE TIME.

December 5 - 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM CST - REGISTER

Webinar Overview
Join us for a fast-paced, one-hour tour of the restyled NFIP Flood Insurance Manual.
In October, FEMA released a new, easy to use Flood Insurance Manual. FEMA designed the manual with insurance professionals and other stakeholders in mind. The newly redesigned manual aims to make flood insurance issues and NFIP processes more understandable.
Navigating the Restyled NFIP Flood Insurance Manual webinar is not intended to teach you the manual’s content. It will not discuss NFIP rules, rating methodology or coverages. Instead, the webinar will show you how to get around the new manual in order to ease the transition to it.
FEMA’s goal is to facilitate the understanding of its processes and product from the points of view of the agent, insurer, and policyholder in order to enhance reliability of service from insurance professionals to their policyholders. The new edition of the manual does not change flood insurance coverage or supersede the terms and conditions of the Standard Flood Insurance Policy (SFIP).
The NFIP Flood Insurance Manual is a resource for insurance professionals and others as they work with FEMA to close the insurance gap.
Registration Information
To register, please use the registration link above. This webinar is FREE to attend, but spaces are limited so please register early.
No Continuing Education credits are offered for this webinar in any state.
