As the water crisis continues to unfold, the NAACP, led by our Director for the Center for Environmental and Climate Justice, Abre’ Conner, is on the ground in Jackson, supporting and advocating for Black residents impacted by the issue. “Jackson is a microcosm of what divestment looks like in Black communities,” said Conner in an interview with MSNBC’s Zerlina Maxwell. Local residents have been without access to clean water for so many weeks, demonstrating a total disregard not just for their civil rights but also for their human rights. There is more than simply water at stake. This is a battle between our communities and economic and environmental racism. And this is a fight the NAACP is committed to winning for Jackson, and for Black communities across the United States. Over the past few days, she has met with the Mayor of Jackson, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, former mayor Harvey Johnson, and several residents of the city taking personal accounts of the situation. On Wednesday, September 21, Abre' will testify on Capitol Hill about the implications of what’s happening in Jackson, and what it means at large for the state of Environmental and Climate Justice in America.
