The Biosecurity Training Course
(BBTC) was founded in 2004, by Dr. Robert (Bob) Ellis. The ABSA
BBTC Fort Collins partnership was initiated in 2020 to expand
ABSA International's mid to expert career level course offerings
and to combine resources to serve a wider audience. Each
year the sessions are updated, improved, and new topics are
added. Recent additions include preparations for audits and
inspections; BSL-2/ BSL-3 buildings design and operations;
Clinical and Public Health lab biosafety; prion disease research biosafety;
and field investigations biosafety. Participants will receive
intensive and engaging training on most aspects of biosafety and
biosecurity, including exercises, a greenhouse tour, audit and
inspection discussions, and Q&A discussions.
The BBTC emphasizes the ethics
and principles of biosafety. Worldwide, the BBTC is without equal
in providing an overall basis for Animal, Plant, and General
Biosafety and Biosecurity Program Management. Fees include lunch
each day, a reception on Sunday night, and a group dinner on
Tuesday night.

· Understand and discuss the
general principles of biosafety and biosecurity
· Discuss biosafety management,
select agent regulations, emergency response, risk assessment and
management
· Explore inspection and audit
preparations, dual use research of concern, biosafety cabinet
certification, insectary design and management, clinical and
public health biosafety and biosecurity
Plant
Sessions
· Distinguish how crop security
networks and plant diagnostic laboratories function
· Discuss basic greenhouse design
and management
· Identify the principles for
transgenic plant and infectious disease research containment and
synthetic biology
· Describe the USDA permit
policies and procedures and plan a disease diagnostic lab network
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course is intended for
those biosafety professionals in the middle to expert level of
the profession. Disciplines represented include biosafety,
biosecurity, laboratory designers, laboratory management, program
managers, vivarium management, maintenance and engineering.
Participants include individuals from universities, private industry,
and government.

Dr. Robert Ellis, BS
Microbiology (Wyoming); MS and PhD, Microbiology and Immunology
(Purdue) is Emeritus Director of Biosafety and Emeritus
Professor, Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology
at Colorado State University. Bob is a Certified Biological
Safety Professional, a Diplomate, American College of Veterinary
Microbiologists (Honorary) and was the ABSA President in
2008-2009. Bob received the Everett Hanel, Jr., ABSA Presidential
Award in 2015 and the ABSA Arnold G. Wedum Award in 2020. He has
extensive experience in the design, construction, and operation
of BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities and is recognized nationally and
internationally for his knowledge and practical application of
biosafety practices and principles.

for 5.0 CM points toward RBP/CBSP recertification. ABSA
International is approved as a provider of continuing education
programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS
P.A.C.E.® Program. This course is approved for 37.5 P.A.C.E.®
contact hours.
