2017. Maryland. MONTGOMERY COUNTY AFRICAN AFFAIRS ADVISORY GROUP MENTAL HEALTH AWAERENESS CAMPAIGN

MONTGOMERY COUNTY AFRICAN AFFAIRS ADVISORY GROUP
MENTAL HEALTH AWAERENESS CAMPAIGN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

                         NO LONGER A TABOO!
Mental Health Awareness is one of the top priorities on the agenda for the Montgomery County African Affairs Advisory Group (AAAG). Although Mental Health is a National focus, the African diaspora communities still experiences lack of awareness due to stigma, cultural barriers and beliefs. Moreover, Diaspora communities experience an overall lack of exposure and limited access to information on mental health as well as county resources that are readily available to them. Our goal is to align with the Healthy People 2020 goal of improving mental health through prevention and increased access to appropriate quality mental health services.

Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
According to Healthy People 2020, Mental health is a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and to cope with challenges. Mental health is essential to personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships, and the ability to contribute to community or society.
Joined by members of the African Diaspora Communities, Faith-based organizations, Montgomery College Mental Health program, Mental Health Association of Greater Washington, A Place of Hope, Kariah Health Clinic, experts in the field and many others, the Montgomery County African Affairs Advisory Group officially breaks the silence on mental health.
As we launch the Mental Health Campaign, we aim to create mental health awareness by breaking the taboo of silence at the grassroots-level and beyond to ensure that existing resources meet the needs of diverse communities.
