Food and Agriculture System
Food and Agriculture system have been hijacked by
massive corporations that control industrial food production. But the new food
and farm bill that Congress is working on this year is a chance to take back
the system.
Our food and farm bill - should protect consumers from
corporate monopolies,
- keep farm workers safe and
- midsize farmers on the land,
and
- safeguard our food supply from the worst effects of the climate crisis.
Environmental Protection AgencyThe
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the laws it helps carry out, such
as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, are designed to protect our
communities and our environment. Firmly grounded in scientific evidence,
these protections, and others like them, have made the United States a safer,
healthier place to live. However, when corporations push back and prioritize
profits over the best available science, people are put at risk. For
instance, ethylene oxide is a colorless gas used in facilities that sterilize
medical equipment and some food products, and in the production of certain
chemicals. The EPA’s own research shows that ethylene oxide is extremely
dangerous, but thanks to weak standards and insufficient monitoring—largely
the result of industry opposition—millions of people may be exposed to this
cancer-causing chemical, often without their knowledge. And new UCS research
shows that two types of facilities that emit this cancer-causing gas are
disproportionately polluting - communities of color,
- low-income communities,
and
- non-English language speaking communities.
We must work together to
ensure the best available science is used to protect our communities from
dangerous chemicals such as ethylene oxide. —Katy ============

“We need leaders not in love with money but in love with
justice. Not in love with publicity but
in love with humanity. Leaders who can
subject their particular egos to the pressing urgencies of the great cause of
freedom…a time like this demands great leaders.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
