Food Security: Agri-Pulse NTCA CEO Shirley Bloomfield NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association

NTCA CEO Shirley Bloomfield
NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association

This week’s Open Mic guest is Shirley Bloomfield, CEO of NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association. The COVID-19 pandemic has painfully exposed the “Rural Divide” between those who enjoy adequate internet service and those who suffer from a lack of connectivity. In recent testimony before Congress, Bloomfield advocated for developing a national infrastructure to meet the needs of the day and capturing opportunities of tomorrow. Bloomfield says it is important for government agencies to coordinate efforts in developing and maintaining rural service and says the time is now to take action to provide this essential service to all Americans.

Global Health NOW: 1 in 5 at Greater Risk of Severe COVID-19; Nigerian Doctors on Strike

covid-19: health workers

Nigerian Doctors on Strike

Patients who don't have COVID-19 are being turned away from public hospitals in Nigeria after doctors acted on their threat to strike indefinitely over inadequate COVID-19 protections and salary disputes, Vanguard reports.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors said that staff are still treating COVID-19 patients—but that may change if demands are not met within 2 weeks,  Al Jazeera reports.

800+ Nigerian health workers have tested positive for COVID-19.

As cases continue to rise and isolation units fill, medical experts are concerned that some people continue to flout protective measures, Daily Trust reported.

Physician Ejike Orji, a member of the federal COVID-19 advisory committee, says a spike in cases “is already happening,” he said. “Abuja has been recording an average of 42 cases per day in the last two weeks.”
