The industrialization of the humble tomato preceded the globalized economy that was to follow. It is now as much of a commodity as wheat, rice, or petrol. The tomato’s ability to create strongly identifiable products, such as ketchup, pizza sauce, soups, sauces, drinks or frozen dishes is unbeatable. As early as 1897, ten years before Ford started to mass-produce cars, Heinz was already converting tomatoes into standardized cans of puree. They were one of the first companies to understand the power of branding. They banned unions, imposed uniform standards of production and established genetic laboratories that ensured identical tomato plantations all around the world. Today, wherever you are in the world, you can eat the same tomatoes. This film will trace the journey of tomato paste from Africa, Italy, China and America to show the consequences of this global business.

FEMA’s National Exercise Program was semiannual, but to streamline the
application process and provide better customer service, applications will now
be accepted once per year.
Applications are
open now through June 1
FEMA’s National
Exercise Program provides state, local, tribal and territorial jurisdictions
with no-cost technical assistance for exercises. Support is tailored to the
needs of the jurisdiction and can include assistance with exercise planning,
design, scenario development, conduct, and evaluation. Traditionally, the
application process for this exercise support was semiannual, but to streamline
the application process and provide better customer service, applications will
now be accepted once per year.
The 2023
Exercise Support application period is open through June 1. Applications are
open to all state, local, tribal and territorial governments but new
applicants, especially those from underserved jurisdictions, are urged to
apply. There is no associated cost share for selected jurisdictions for this
exercise assistance.
The National
Exercise Program examines and validates capabilities in all preparedness
mission areas: Prevention, Protection, Mitigation, Response and Recovery.
Exercise support proposals should account for the time required to fulfill the
exercise design stages of their concept. such as exercise planning and
development.
For details
about this opportunity, visit About
the National Exercise Program | FEMA.gov. Program staff is available to
address specific exercise support application questions. Write to NEP@fema.dhs.gov and include “2023 Exercise
