Join Special Guests at Our Day of Service

Dear Neighbor,

Our Second Annual Valley Day of Service is less than two weeks away--on Sunday, April 30!

We'll be joined by a number of special guests, including Mayor Karen Bass, County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, Senator Caroline Menjivar, and Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo.

We're partnering with dozens of community groups and nonprofits to work on service projects around the San Fernando Valley. Projects include cleaning our neighborhoods, packing homeless outreach kits, a blood drive, supporting our seniors and healthcare workers and so much more. These projects are filling up fast, so be sure to sign up ASAP!

All volunteers should meet at Pierce College at 9 a.m. for breakfast, directions, and some positive energy. Advance registration is required.

Ramping up to meet demand after SNAP rollback

Stretching fewer dollars farther after SNAP decreases

The loss of the ability to buy a week’s worth of meals.

That was the impact for at least 328,000 people – and likely far more – in our region when the pandemic-era additional SNAP benefits expired in March. Since then, our partner organizations have reported increases in the clients coming through their doors, as well as seeing former clients return to again seek food assistance.

One client shared with us that she now must space out her purchases of meats, fresh produce and eggs; ration meals; and seek more support from a local food pantry.

Read more on our blog about how the rollback in SNAP benefits is affecting our neighbors.

Millions could see cuts to food stamps as federal pandemic aid ends

Millions could see cuts to food stamps as federal pandemic aid ends – Washington Post

From the article:

Radha Muthiah, chief executive of the Capital Area Food Bank, said their analysis shows that 330,000 people in the greater Washington area will be affected by the SNAP decrease, with recipients seeing an average of $93 less a month.

“People are stretching their budgets already, given the high rates of inflation,” she said. “And not everyone recovered from the pandemic in the same way — many are lagging.”

More locally sourced fresh food making its way to those in need in Maryland

More locally sourced fresh food making its way to those in need in Maryland – WTOP

From the article:

“Since the recent launch of this program, we’ve been able to source and distribute over 5,000 cartons of eggs; 3,600 gallons of whole milk; thousands of heads of lettuce, and other foods that are nutrient-dense, but also increasingly expensive,” said Adam LaRose, director of advocacy and public policy at Capital Area Food Bank, which serves Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.

He said the group expects to provide 2.2 million healthy and Maryland-produced meals over the next two years [through the new Local Food Purchasing Agreement program].
