It’s hard to believe that the 2023 Atlantic hurricane
season officially begins tomorrow. Even as we prepare for what this
season may bring, we are still learning about gaps in recovery from last
season’s storms.
In 2022, Hurricanes Ian and Nicole devastated parts of
Florida and affected other states along the Atlantic coastline, while
Hurricane Fiona exacerbated issues already affecting the fragile
infrastructure in Puerto Rico.
To help affected communities, we're pleased to announce
eight grants totaling nearly $2.5 million from the Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund.
The grants support recovery from 2022 hurricanes and aim to build
communities’ ability to withstand future storms.
Last month, Austin Snowbarger, our learning and
partnerships manager, and Sally Ray, our director of domestic funds,
traveled to Puerto Rico to meet with grantee partners and learn from the
people most affected by disasters about ongoing needs and the best ways
to support recovery and preparedness. Austin reflects on why philanthropy
must invest now to ensure communities have the resources to prepare for
disasters and strengthen resilience.
