Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Tomorrow, on Saturday, September 9, we have two important opportunities for young people:

At Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, we are hosting 'Afterschool in the City' — an opportunity for families and caregivers to connect with over 50 organizations and agencies that provide afterschool and out-of-school time programming to young people in DC. If you are looking to get your child or teen connected to engaging activities after school or on the weekends, come to Turkey Thicket Recreation Center between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and find a program that works well for your child and family.

And downtown, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, we are hosting a hiring fair for youth between the ages of 18 and 24. No registration is necessary — young people can just show up to the library between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. with their resume and meet with potential employers. Need assistance printing your resume? The library can help with that too.

If you are older than 24 and looking for a new job or a new career path, we also have opportunities for you: DC is hiring. At DC Government, we have careers that offer good pay, good benefits, and a unique opportunity to make a positive difference in the community.

  • The Metropolitan Police Department is hiring and currently has a $25,000 hiring bonus. Join MPD on Saturday, September 23 for a special hiring event where you can complete multiple steps of the application process in just one day. Learn more and apply today at joinmpd.dc.gov.
  • The Office of the State Superintendent of Education is hiring school bus drivers and bus attendants. Learn more about becoming a bus driver HERE and learn more about becoming a bus attendant HERE.
  • On Tuesday, September 12, attend a job fair at the Anacostia Neighborhood Library to learn more about open positions in fields such as customer service, retail, security, administration, and more.
  • The Office of Unified Communications is hiring Telecommunications Equipment Operators - 911 Universal Call Takers. Search job ID 23194 at careers.dc.gov. There is currently a $2,500 hiring bonus.
  • The Contracts & Procurement Team at DGS is searching for small businesses to bid for future solicitations and learn more about how to do business with District government. DGS is hosting an open house on Tuesday, September 12 and you can learn more HERE

Jobs in public service are meaningful because every day the people who do these jobs make a difference in the lives of DC residents. If that sounds like something you are interested in, learn more about these jobs and others at careers.dc.gov and mota.dc.gov

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
