The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) is
honored to announce Pétronille Vaweka of the
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as the recipient of
the 2023 Women Building Peace Award.
The Women Building Peace Council,
a 15-member panel of experts and advisors, selected
Pétronille as the award’s fourth recipient from over 150
nominations received from 42 countries. Vaweka joins María
Eugenia Mosquera Riascos of Colombia, Josephine Ekiru of
Kenya, and Rita M. Lopidia of
South Sudan as a recipient of this prestigious
international award.
The award was announced at a ceremony on
Friday, December 8, at the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence in
Kinshasa. USIP’s Kathleen Kuehnast,
director of the program on Women, Peace and Security, and Sandrine
Nama, national program coordinator in Burkina Faso,
were on-hand to unveil the award during the ceremony
honoring Vaweka.
Vaweka is currently the senior mediator for Engaged
Women for Peace in Africa (FEPA), a network of women
working in conflict-affected areas of eastern DRC created
in 2022.
USIP established the Women Building Peace Award to amplify
women’s roles in building peace worldwide. Unlike other
prominent awards for women, the focus is on women in civil
society who are working on the front lines of conflict
every day and who have not previously received awards or
global recognition for their peacebuilding efforts.
USIP will honor Vaweka at a special celebration that will
take place in Washington, D.C., in early 2024. We invite
you to follow USIP's social media channels for details and
for information on the opening of nominations for the 2024
Women Building Peace Award.
