COVID — “still a pandemic.” WHO said COVID is “still a pandemic” and classified JN.1 — which could be more severe than omicron — as a variant of interest due to its rapid spread in mid-December.
The good news is that current vaccines are effective against JN.1 and reap other benefits. A Canadian study found that repeat COVID infections increased Long COVID risk.
A separate study by University of Washington researchers found that repeated mRNA vaccinations strengthened immunity against COVID, and Yale University scientists studying Long COVID argue that boosters provide greater disease protection.
During the first WHO media briefing of 2024, Dr. Tedros called on governments “to maintain surveillance and sequencing, and to ensure access to affordable and reliable tests, treatments, and vaccines for their populations.”
