Hi Charles,

I hope you are enjoying the weekend and not working like me. I have been pursuing this request because the subject matter is of interest to me. I realize that this request may be long resolved BUT just in case or for future reference this is what I have so far.

Hi Dave...Selena and I would be happy to help you in any way we can. I am a retired Occupational Therapist (married to a retired fire chief) and Selena is the Pub. Ed person for Woodside Fire Protection District. Woodside has a good website that has our program in it. The program is called, When Words Are Not Enough and consists of a video, manual, poster and other materials. There is also a good website that had an excellent Feb. newsletter with lots of experts on the topic of help for kids on the Autism Spectrum with regards to emergency situations. It is called OAR (organization for Autism Research). You can google it then get into their back issues of newsletters and see all the great ideas and programs existing. Selena and I have one article in that issue that is part of the list. Please contact either Selena or me if we can help you further. Hope this is helpful. Glenda Fuge

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents arrested a Guatemalan who transported and prostituted a teen girl from Maryland. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. Full Story

Sept. 6, 2012 — Mexican national pleads guilty to illegally re-entering the US
A Mexican national, who had been deported from the United States three times, pleaded guilty to one count of illegally re-entering the United States after deportation. ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) is investigating this case. Full Story

Sept. 5, 2012 — 21 individuals charged in "Operation Knot So Fast 2012"
Multiple indictments charging 21 individuals with conspiracy and/or immigration benefit fraud (marriage fraud) were unsealed Wednesday. If convicted the maximum penalty for each violation is five years in federal prison. Full Story

HSI's nationwide search for a "Jane Doe" suspected child pornographer ended Tuesday with the arrest of two Salem, Ore., residents. The pair is accused of producing child pornography videos featuring them engaging in sexual contact with two child victims. Full Story

Sept. 5, 2012 — Los Angeles manufacturing company, its owner criminally charged for hiring violations
Following an HSI probe, federal criminal charges were filed against a Van Nuys manufacturing company and one of its owners for hiring unauthorized alien workers and repeatedly taking steps to cover up the illegal activity. Full Story

Combat poverty

People who make $15,000 or less are three times more likely to have diabetes than people who make $50,000 or more, regardless of race.
End junk food subsidies

Between 1985 and 2010 the price of beverages sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup dropped 24%, while the price of fresh fruits and vegetables rose 39%.

Do 4 things to cut your risk of diabetes by 93%:

Eat healthy

The lowest rates of Type 2 diabetes in the world occur in populations consuming a whole foods, plant-based diet.
Lose weight
Exercise

Overweight people walking 150 minutes a week can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by nearly 60%.
Stop smoking

I Serve DC Newsletter. National Preparedness Month events in Washington, D.C.

Mayor Gray Proclaims September 'National Preparedness Month' in the District

Mayor Vincent C. Gray has proclaimed September as National Preparedness Month (NPM) in the District of Columbia. NPM is an annual campaign to encourage Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, schools, organizations, businesses and communities. Serve DC will hold three events to recognize National Preparedness Month, and the District's Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) will hold ward-based emergency-preparedness training sessions.

"As the nation's capital, we must be prepared to respond to a number of natural and man-made threats, and National Preparedness Month is a way for us to emphasize emergency readiness across our city," said Mayor Gray. "Informed and engaged residents are a key to keeping our communities safer, stronger and better prepared to address threats of terrorism, crime and disasters."

Make Your Lunch Hour Meaningful on 9/11: Join Serve DC & Partners for a 9/11 National Day of Service & Remembrance Event

On Tuesday, September 11th, make your lunch hour meaningful by joining Serve DC and HandsOn Greater DC Cares on Freedom Plaza for an afternoon of service dedicated to supporting veterans and first responders. The tribute event, which runs from 11:30am to 2:00pm, will commemorate the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance and National Preparedness Month with hands-on service projects, emergency preparedness demonstrations and trainings, a volunteer recruitment fair, and a brief speaking program featuring local and community leaders, a color guard and more.

Serve DC Now Recruiting a Fall Intern to Support its National Service Programs

Serve DC is recruiting for an intern to support the agency's National Service programs, including AmeriCorps State, Disability Inclusion, Program Development and Training, and general commission activities. Ideal candidates should be interested in grants administration, National Service, and volunteerism. The intern must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and available for approximately 12-15 hours per week. This is an unpaid opportunity to begin in September for the fall semester with the ability to extend to the spring semester.
