SBA Awards $100,000 for Veteran Owned Small Business Growth Pilot Training Program

 

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration today announced a partnership with the Veteran Entrepreneurial Training and Resource Network (VETRN) to establish a pilot training program for military veterans who are small business owners and their immediate family members.

The Veteran Owned Small Business Growth Training program will equip these entrepreneurs with the resources and networks necessary to grow their small businesses. An award of $100,000 from President Donald Trump’s salary from the second quarter of fiscal year 2018 will fund the program.

Starting in September 2019, this 26-week program based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire will feature 13 weeks of Saturday morning classroom sessions with 12 to 20 participants, as well as 13 weeks of peer-to-peer mentoring sessions. The course curriculum will include strategic planning, financial management, cash flow forecasting, marketing the small business, sales methods, human resources, developing a growth plan, access to capital, legal issues, and government contracting.

“While programs exist that help veterans start their small business, there is a critical need for programs that assist existing business owners with growing their business,” said SBA Acting Administrator Chris Pilkerton. “Adding VETRN to the SBA resource network will enable us to fill this gap and empower veterans with the training, mentorship, tools, and network they need to achieve their long-term goals.”

Applicants must be a current business owner with at least one year of operation and one employee (not including the owner), and annual revenues of $75,000 or more. Also required is the passion, dedication and commitment to grow the small business.

Unpacking the Conflict in Libya: A Private Briefing with Anas El Gomati, Director of the Sadeq Institute

The Wilson Center’s Africa Program and Middle East Program invite you to a briefing with Anas El Gomati, Director of Libya’s first think tank, the Sadeq Insitute, on Tuesday, June 25 from 10:30 am-12:00 pm in the 6th Floor Boardroom at the Wilson Center.
Mr. El Gomati will give a briefing on the current situation in Libya and address geopolitical dynamics at play as well as competing narratives around the conflict. His remarks will also highlight the most pressing challenges facing Libya and its people, including the dire situation of the internally displaced across the country.
Merissa Khurma, Project Director, Middle East Special Initiatives at the Wilson Center will moderate the meeting. Michael Morrow, Senior Diplomatic Fellow with the Africa Program will give opening remarks.
This event will be held under Chatham House non-attribuation rule.

The Penn Kemble Forum at the National Endowment for Democracy is an opportunity for rising foreign policy professionals to share ideas across sectors and explore the role of democracy and human rights within a broader policy and strategic context. Drawing on the expertise of foreign policy practitioners, activists, and academic experts, the Forum convenes monthly for bipartisan dinner discussions on key national security and foreign policy issues. 
Organized and sponsored by the Endowment, the Forum has provided fellows with the opportunity to:
  • Draw on the insights of prominent diplomats, like U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, as well as the experience of leading dissidents from Russia and North Korea. 
  • Engage leading intellectuals, including the Washington Post’s Anne Applebaum and Stanford University’s Francis Fukuyama, on issues ranging from disinformation to identity politics.
  • Participate in skills-based sessions (e.g., how to write/place an op-ed) and a private forum with the Holocaust Museum’s genocide prevention and anti-Semitism programs;
  • Learn about the domestic and foreign policy-making process from former White House Chief of Staff Andy Card (NED’s Board Chairman).
  • Network with other emerging foreign policy/national security professionals in Happy Hour and social events.

The Forum will run from September 2019 to June 2020. Applicants should be professionals with between 5-10 years of working experience on national security and foreign policy-related issues. The Forum encourages applications from within government, think tanks, and the non-profit community, as well as Capitol Hill staff, journalists covering international affairs, and the private sector. 

The program is unpaid and nonresidential. Successful applicants are expected to consistently attend the monthly seminars, held after working hours. Additional non-mandatory events will also be scheduled.

The program is focused on democracy and human rights aspects of foreign and national security policy and is oriented toward individuals with less specific experience in these fields. To ensure regular participation, applicants must be based in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
