The Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) is offering Science Policy Scholar Travel Awards to support the development of junior investigators who are interested in women’s health or sex and gender differences and are also interested in research policy. The awards, of up to $3,000 each, will support the attendance of two investigators at the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) Annual Meeting on May 7–11, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The OSSD has four objectives: To facilitate interdisciplinary research on sex and gender differences at all levels of biological organization; To advance the understanding of sex and gender differences by bringing together scientists and clinicians of diverse backgrounds; To encourage the application of new knowledge of sex and gender differences to improve health and health care; and To promote the field of sex and gender differences research through education, mentoring, and outreach. This OSSD Annual Meeting will provide an opportunity for investigators to stay informed about the most recent advances in research and policy regarding sex differences in health and disease. Note: To apply for a travel award, a scholar must submit an abstract on women's health or sex and gender differences policy. For a scholar to be eligible to receive a travel award, the abstract must be accepted for a poster, oral session, or symposium at the meeting. Applications are due by February 1, 2023. New VA Life Insurance Coming Soon VA Life Insurance policies have been serving our nation’s Veterans, service members, and their families for over 100 years. Starting January 1, 2023, enrollment opens for Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife)—a new program offering increased access for Veterans age 80 or under with any level of service-connected disability (0-100%). Life insurance is a key component for future financial planning. With the right policy and coverage amount, life insurance can cover end-of-life costs, provide an inheritance to family, serve as income to a spouse, or cover some outstanding debts. Those currently enrolled in VA’s current policy for service-connected Veterans, Service-Disabled Veterans Life Insurance (S-DVI), may keep their coverage or switch to VALife. Although S-DVI will be closed to new enrollments after December 31, 2022.

NACCHO is now accepting applications for the 2023 MRC Operational Readiness Awards

 NACCHO is now accepting applications for the 2023 MRC Operational Readiness Awards (ORA) which provide funding to MRC units to develop their emergency response capabilities. Funding for this opportunity is available through a cooperative agreement between NACCHO and ASPR.
 
PLEASE NOTE, THE APPLICATION DEADLINIE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 16, 2022.
 
Eligible MRC units can apply for either a $5,000 or $10,000 award through the competitive selection process. Applications are open through December 16.

Connecting Mitigation Plans and THIRA/SPR for Increased Resilience A hazard mitigation plan guides state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) government decision makers on investments in long-term actions that reduce risk to natural hazards. A Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA)/Stakeholder Preparedness Review (SPR) helps communities better understand how prepared they are and how to address vulnerabilities.   Both processes are key tools to reducing risk. While each process has distinct purposes and requirements, there are some similarities. Streamlining these processes will lead to less duplication and greater use of these products. FEMA’s job aid “Increasing Resilience Using THIRA/SPR and Mitigation Planning ” outlines the similarities between the two processes. It shows how to align the processes through seven unified steps:   Involvement Across the Planning Area   Threat and Hazard Identification   Risk Assessment   Develop Capability Targets  Identify Gaps  Develop, Prioritize and Operationalize Strategies   Monitor and Adjust  There are opportunities for alignment as SLTT governments work to update mitigation plans and THIRA/SPR. THIRA/SPR submissions are due annually by Dec. 31. Mitigation plans are updated every five years. In 2023, 34 mitigation plans will be updated.  FEMA encourages SLTT governments to use the job aid to help with updates, identify mitigation capability gaps, and coordinate efforts to build resilience.
