How Vancouver prepares for emergencies

Everyone has a role to play in making sure we all stay safe in emergencies.

Our responsibility

The City commits major resources to make our public buildings, roads, bridges, and you safe.
Like other local governments in BC, we lead the initial response to emergencies and disasters by:
  • Preparing emergency plans
  • Coordinating and managing emergency planning with first responders
  • Running emergency training and exercises with City staff and other first responders
  • Training volunteers to help deliver essential services and housing during a disaster
  • Providing basic services to those impacted by a disaster
  • Maintaining police, fire, and specialized teams (such as CAN-TF1 and Hazmat) to mobilize quickly in an emergency situation
We regularly share updates relevant for residents via our social media accounts. In the event of an emergency our @CityofVancouver

Twitter account is a good source to follow. We will share information from the relevant emergency response organizations such as fire, police, the Port of Vancouver, and health authorities. Depending on the nature of the emergency or threat, we will provide further information and other sources to follow for critical information.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescueteam organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, which allows them to focus on more complex tasks. Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters is built and enhanced.

Engaging with CERT In Person. July 28, 2021. Plan for the worst, and hope for .......

The Bear Story

If you can’t out run the CUBs
(Covid-19, future pandemics, water & food security issues, financial setbacks, other criris events),
You wont be able to out run the BEAR.
              (CLIMATE CHANGE).

Take advantage of the slight break in COVID-19 recovery as social distancing is relaxed to prepare for future pandemics, disasters, emergencies, and impacts of climate change on your community if you have started your online\virtual training in CERT (community emergency response team) organization.

Prepare for your partnerships, collaborations, coordination, and communications with other entities and local emergency management offices, and other volunteer organizations, American Red Cross (ARC) local chapter, and in the case of diaspora international members International Red Crescent\Red Cross organizations.

Prepare for and plan for worst case scenarios of climate change, vulnerabilities to water & food systems, know evacuation routes if evacuation of your homes and communities become necessity.  Plan for the worst and hope for …….
