The Minerals Security Partnership Announces Collaboration in Minerals Exploration, Production, and Processing Between GECAMINES in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and JOGMEC in Japan

Office of the Spokesperson

The United States, as Chair of the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP), and MSP partners, announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between LA GENERALE DES CARRIERES ET DES MINES (GECAMINES) and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). This milestone collaboration, forged through dialogue among MSP partners, creates a framework for coordination in mineral exploration, production, and processing in alignment with our shared commitment to the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI)’s development of the Lobito Corridor. The MOU will create a framework for cooperation in the areas of mining and mineral resources with the intention of expanding of business opportunities for the parties.

This coordination among MSP partners is a powerful demonstration of the MSP’s efforts to secure and diversify critical mineral supply chains, which bring economic benefits to local communities and source countries such as the DRC. In addition, GECAMINES will be a key player in the Lobito Corridor project thanks to its large portfolio of joint-venture projects in production, representing over 1.5 million tons of copper cathodes and 100,000 tons of cobalt hydroxide and more to be commissioned from projects under construction.

Freedom House Pittsburgh Ambulance Service celebrated during Black History Month

“You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.” —Angela Davis

PITTSBURGH —
As Black History Month begins, the city of Pittsburgh is honoring the legacy of the Freedom House Ambulance Service, which was founded in the Hill District in 1967.
It was the first ambulance service in the country to provide medical service to patients before they arrived at hospitals.\
Dr. Peter Safer, who invented CPR, collaborated with the Freedom House community organization to start the ambulance service, which was initially made up of 25 Black men and women.
A display honoring the Freedom House Ambulance Service is on display through Feb. 29 on the first floor of the City-County Building downtown

Letter from the Mayor

Letter from the Director

Hello Service Ambassadors,

Throughout January, Serve DC has served our residents through public service in the community!

The month began with Serve DC leading the charge of volunteerism by partnering with DPR and Events DC to kick off the 10th anniversary of the Fresh Start 5K race.

On January 13th, Serve DC hosted our Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day of Action at Arthur Capper Recreation Center. With the help of more than 100 volunteers, we packed over 100 boxes of food and delivered over 200 senior care kits to the Arthur Capper Senior facility. This event was made possible with the partnership of US Hunger, FEMS, Kaiser Permanente, and Albertson by way of the Department of Health.

Our National Service Director, Adam Lattimore, also attended our grantee City Year's MLK Day of Service at Ketchum Elementary School in honor of MLK Day of Service. Each year, City Year honors the legacy of Dr. King by organizing one of Washington, DC's most significant community-wide days of service for volunteers across the community.

In support of Mayor Muriel Bowser's downtown initiative, Serve DC attended the launch of the new Gallery Place/Chinatown Task Force. This Task Force will develop a vision and recommendations for future uses of the two-block District parcel encompassing Capital One Arena and Gallery Place.

January has also been busy for CERT members in the community! For the past three years, CERT courses have taken place at the Fauntery Community Enrichment Center for their Ready in Ward 7 program series—the presentations about Emergency Preparedness and workforce development skills to be successful in the Emergency Preparedness field.

Frances Whalen, Serve DC's very own CERT specialist, recently presented a Stop the Bleed demonstration at the Fannie Mae headquarters with local outreach partners, including MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Howard University Hospital, Inova Fairfax, and UM Capital Region Medical. On Friday, January 19th, CERTs supported Mayor Bowser's call to assist residents during the Water Boil Advisory in Wards 3 & 4 by passing out water cases at Catholic University.

Yicheng Ren, a member of our SDC CERT team and a 2022 Mid-Fall Cohort graduate, took CERT to help others be prepared in cases of emergency. He has continued his service, supporting the team with hands-on support in our office and volunteering at our programs. We wish him the best as he returns home to China.

To close out the month, Mayor Bowser recently put out the call for our #DCSnowheroes program; Serve DC was able to deploy our 200+ volunteers, including Mute the Violence DC, & DC Bulls, CERT, and other community organizations and constituents who signed up to become a #DCSnowHero. Our Snow Heroes provided shoveling services to over 300+ Senior residents in the district.

We look forward to sharing fantastic stories in next month's newsletter, cheers to public service!

In partnership and collaboration,

Jermaine Dillon

 Director

MLK Day of Action

On January 15th, we held our MLK Day of Action in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our volunteers packaged meals and put together senior go kits, to give to our Ward 8 residents at Arthur Capper Senior Center. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn Hands on Heart CPR and receive their vaccines and health screenings!

CERT Member Highlight

Yicheng Ren, who is a member of our SDC CERT team, and a graduate of Mid- Fall 2022 Cohort took CERT to help others be prepared in cases of emergency. He has continued his service supporting the team with hands-on support in our office and volunteering at our programs.

DHS Holds Listening Sessions on DHS Environmental Justice Program

This month, CRCL and the DHS Office of the Chief Readiness Support Officer hosted listening sessions with external stakeholders and Tribal leaders on the Department’s Environmental Justice Program. DHS convened the listening sessions to provide information about the Request for Information (RFI) DHS posted to the Federal Register, which closes on February 16, 2024. The RFI is seeking public comment and feedback on how environmental justice is considered Department-wide, how it can provide opportunities for meaningful engagement in decision-making that impacts human health and the environment, and what to include in the next DHS Environmental Justice Strategy.
