Sandy 1 Year Later: national Disaster Distress Helpline 24/7 crisis counseling

 (toll-free 1-800-985-5990 / text "TalkWithUs" to 66746) 

remains available for anyone struggling with emotional distress.

National Disaster Distress Helpline (a program of SAMHSA) remains available one year after Hurricane Sandy devastated communities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and in 9 other states + Washington, D.C. 

Calls (multilingual & toll-free 1-800-985-5990) and texts (text "TalkWithUs" to 66746; 

Spanish-speakers can text "Hablanos" to 66746) are answered 24/7 by trained, caring counselors, including via a special Sandy "Affected Area Center" recently operationalized to take calls specifically from Sandy survivors, loved ones of victims, 

First responders & others impacted by Sandy via accessing a special "Press 1" menu option on the hotline. 

Calls and texts are confidential, and counselors can assist those in distress by discussing healthy coping, enhancing social supports, providing crisis intervention if needed, and refer to local Sandy-specific services for follow-up care and support.
