Doing
the most good for the most people during active shooter or Boston Marathon
bombing type of incidents requires different techniques and mindset than
normal first aid or disaster techniques. This class will focus on the skills
and procedures that are required in these unique situations. It will cover
the use of commercial and improvised tourniquets when required for multiple
patients in a hostile environment and the use of occlusive dressings for
chest and neck injuries. Also covered will be a variety of techniques to
improve your ability to stabilize common bone and joint injuries. This
section will start where we left off in Med II and concentrate on what is
required to immobilize injuries during splinting and then to apply a splint

A person
who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. While emergency
responders will arrive as quickly as possible, bystanders are almost always
there first. In the case of disaster and high-casualty incidents, emergency
services are often spread thin. This is where Stop The Bleed! comes in
to play. STOP THE BLEED is a FREE training program
created by the US Department of Homeland Security in conjunction with FEMA
and various other agencies, to train bystanders in life-saving techniques.
With the rise of mass shootings and active shooter situations in schools,
churches, public meeting places, and even office buildings, it is vital that
more and more individuals are trained in the basics of life-saving
techniques, such as how to properly use a tourniquet, use a hemostatic agent
such as QuikClot, or even apply a chest seal. Everything that can be
done to save a person's life is done in the First Five Minutes! What
would you do if you were faced with the unimaginable? GET TRAINED!

Volunteer
Reception Center Basics (VRC) Functional Exercise/Simulation
LOCATION:
Franklin D. Reeves Center, Community Room (2000-14th Street NW, 2nd Floor,
Washington, DC 20009
The
Volunteer Reception Center registers, screens, and places spontaneous
volunteers in available opportunities in times of disaster.
You will
gain the skills to establish a local Volunteer Reception Center (VRC).
Established VRCs can be invaluable to your community in times of disaster.
Volunteer
Reception Center Training will prepare participants to staff VRCs that will
register and place spontaneous volunteers in times of disaster. These centers
ensure that volunteers are given meaningful and constructive opportunities to
satisfy their desire to assist in a time of need, while not overwhelming the
affected community during the disaster response and recovery process. The training
includes an interactive volunteer reception center exercise where
participants experience the VRC model and practice managing spontaneous
volunteers.
