Fundamentals of Microbiology and Infectious Disease
A distance learning opportunity
June 9 and 14, 2021
12:30 – 3:00pm (CDT)

Join us Wednesday, June 9 and Monday, June 14 from 12:30-3:00pm CDT for the opportunity to participate in protocol review, facilities planning, and any other risk assessment activities, but are unsure as to the actual nature of the disease risks of microbiological agents. Biological safety and risk assessment will not be covered in this course. The proposed topics will cover infectious agents, virulence factors, pathogenicities, host-microbe interactions, susceptibility, modes of transmission, and the changes seen in the microbial world. If you don’t know the difference between a TCID50, PFU, or ID50; or why HBV is stable in dried blood and HIV is not; or why influenza is an inhalation hazard; or why public health officials advocate flu shots each year—then this course is for you.

Webinar: Society of Environmental Journalist. investigating Extractive Industries. June 10, 2021.

Investigating Extractive Industries
June 10, 2021 - 1:30-2:30 p.m. ET
All journalists welcome!

Extractive industries — mining, forestry, fishing, oil/gas — offer the promise of economic growth and the peril of environmental degradation. By shining a light on extractive industries, investigative environmental journalism can inform communities, hold businesses accountable, and catalyze better decisions by governments. But investigative reporting can be expensive, difficult, and dangerous. Join us June 10th to hear from leading reporters whose powerful investigations have increased transparency about extractive industries in the Americas. You will see inspiring examples of investigations into logging, mining, and fishing and walk away with tips for staying safe while staying true to the story.
