POSITION SUMMARY

NAACP is seeking a Director of Talent and Media Engagement to join the Hollywood Bureau and Communications teams. Reporting to the VP of the Hollywood Bureau and Director of Media Relations, the applicant will focus on media strategy, cultivate relationships with local and national sources, and lead the execution of media-related initiatives around the NAACP Image Awards. In addition, the individual will work closely with teams across the Association to amplify advocacy, engagement, and policy throughout the promotion of marquee events. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

1.   NAACP Hollywood Bureau (HB)

  • Develop and manage the Association’s Celebrity Ambassador program by working with various divisions on programs and initiatives to secure celebrity spokespersons;
  • Manage and develop content for HB social media platforms;
  • Secure media opportunities/interviews for NAACP executives;
  • Develop talking points, statements, quotes, and briefings for NAACP executives, in preparation for media appearances;
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with members of the media at the national, state, and local levels, and pitch reporters on covering HB initiatives/events;
  • Create press releases, media alerts and update website content;
  • Serve as point of contact for incoming media inquiries and manage media requests in a timely manner; 
  • Interface and liaise with the internal Communications division and external PR agencies regarding all Image Awards events and activities;
  • Oversee the work of NAACP Image Award Nominee Liaison; and
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Vice President of the Hollywood Bureau or other designee.

2.    NAACP Communications

  • Serve as a senior member of the Communications team and lead media strategy for several NAACP projects and initiatives relating to the Hollywood community;
  • Proactively build and maintain relationships with relevant reporters, broadcast bookers, and opinion editors;
  • As directed by the Communications team, work closely with the Policy, Strategy, Field Operations, Legal, and Events teams to develop and implement media strategies;
  • Advance the NAACP mission by establishing and amplifying the Association’s thought leadership and expertise through earned media coverage of groundbreaking research directed toward policymakers and global stakeholders;
  • Brainstorm ways to insert NAACP policies and voices into conversations of the ever-evolving news cycle;
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with members of the media at the national, state, and local levels, and pitch reporters on covering NAACP initiatives;
  • Develop talking points and messaging and prepare thought leaders for media interviews;
  • As directed, serve as point of contact for incoming media inquiries and manage media requests in a timely manner; 
  • Work in collaboration with broader Communications team to respond promptly to breaking news developments when they occur;
  • Play a lead role in media planning and promotion around high-priority events, senior administration, congressional or corporate officials, and other VIPs;
  • Organize media briefings featuring NAACP experts in response to Breaking news;
  • Maintain policy-specific press lists; and
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Media Relations or other designee.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Experience/Education 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience; 
  • Five to seven years of experience in media and/or communications; 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well on a team;
  • Deep understanding of the news cycle and traditional and emerging media platforms; 
  • Ability to multitask, initiate new projects, meet tight deadlines, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Creative and entrepreneurial with strong problem-solving skills; and
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
