Continuing the Legacy in Aviation Program with Southwest Airlines Do you have a child who would love to learn more about aviation? The Greater Washington Urban League is pleased to announce a partnership with Southwest Airlines, which will be celebrating its 6th Annual Continuing the Legacy in Aviation Program. The League will nominate students for the opportunity to receive an aviation experience from August 13-14 in Dallas, TX with airline and hotel accommodations paid for by Southwest Airlines. The student must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.  At the program in Dallas, students will get the opportunity to tour Southwest Airlines headquarters, attend the pilot and flight attendant training center, the Dallas Love Field control tower and meet Tuskegee Airmen and the Southwest senior management team. Requirements: The youth must be between 11 - 18 years old and live in the GWU L service area of the District, Prince George’s or Montgomery County. To qualify, the student must write a 500-word or less essay as listed below. Part 1: Explain how the accomplishments of aviators past and present have significantly impacted the aviation industry in the 21st century. (250 words or less) Part 2: Explain your personal fascination with aviation. (250 words or less) Submission must be typed listing the parent’s name, email address, and telephone number and the youth’s name, age and resident address. Unfortunately, many people with Autism Spectrum Disorders are excluded from work for a variety of reasons. This interactive and dynamic session will give attendees a number of strategies which can be used to help persons with ASDs find jobs that will work for everybody involved. Learning Objectives In this training participants will learn to: State the importance of work for all people Identify the barriers to employment experienced by many people with ASD Generate strategies to address barriers to employment Name the three stages of career development Explain strategies useful in developing jobs for persons with ASDs Match jobs for persons with ASDs and create onsite support strategies ABOUT the SPEAKER    Dan Baker, PhD is Director of Community Positive Behavior Support, Transition, and Supported Employment Projects, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Baker's focus at The Boggs Center is on positive behavior support, models of community and educational support, transition services, and mental health services for persons with disabilities. Dr. Baker earned his PhD in Educational Psychology in 1992 and a Teaching License in 1990 from the University of Minnesota. He has worked with people with a range of disabilities; his applied work includes efforts in schools, residential settings for people with disabilities, recreational programs, and employment supports. Dr. Baker is well published in both edited books and literary journals. Most of his published work addresses strategies for teaching direct care staff to work with persons who present challenges. His contributions earned him the 2010 Clinical Practice Award from NADD, an international professional association dedicated to advancing mental wellness for persons with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Baker is a reviewer for the journals Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, American Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and Research in Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Baker is very involved with NADD: An association for persons with developmental disabilities and mental health needs, serving on the Board of Directors and co-editing The NADD Bulletin from 2006 - 2011. 970 - Training Opportunity - V0011 VTTX Fixed Hazmat Incident Focus - July 10 2013

Exercise Description:

This exercise is the eleventh in a series of 12 Virtual Tabletop Exercises (VTTX) that will be offered monthly by the Emergency Management Institute (EMI). The VTTX involves key personnel discussing simulated scenarios in an informal setting, and can be used to assess plans, policies, training, and procedures. This VTTX differs from other Tabletop exercises in that it will be conducted using Video-Teleconference (VTC) technology (not web-based), and is intended to provide an opportunity for responders across the nation to simultaneously participate in a hazard-specific facilitated discussion. Lead facilitation for the exercise will be coordinated by EMI, with local facilitation provided by the participating agency. This format will allow the common delivery of exercise materials, scenarios, modules, and discussion questions among those participating in the exercise. New to the VTTX program is the addition of an After-Action Report/Improvement Plan (AAR/IP) template for completion by the participating organization. Read more...
