In 1790, Maryland and Virginia ceded portions of their land in order to establish the Federal City. After the creation of the Federal City, for 10 years, DC had constables who were named and appointed by Maryland and Virginia. In 1802, DC was given the authority to police itself. In 1861 the Metropolitan Police Department was created and supported by President Abraham Lincoln. Attorney William B. Webb was appointed the first Superintendent of the Police for Washington, DC. From the first Police Chief in 1861 to 1977, twenty-two Chiefs later, the first African American Police Chief, the late Burtell M. Jefferson was appointed in January 1978 by the late Marion Barry, Jr. Who: Chief Robert Contee, III, one of the youngest police chiefs in the history of DC, and a major City in America, and an African American.

WOLCF U.S. Foreign Service Initiative

Program Dates: January-June 2022 (monthly Saturday meetings)

Application Deadline: Immediately

 

The William O. Lockridge Community Foundation (WOLCF)'s new U.S. Foreign Service Initiative is designed to introduce students to careers in international affairs.

 

This 6-month pilot program begins on January 29th and will meet one Saturday each month until June 25th.

 

Students will be exposed to international trade; Africa fashion; tourism (Benin Embassy); diplomacy (New York); media, exposure, language, and culture; and land resources and science.

 

The program is for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders in Wards 7 and 8. The deadline has just been extended until available slots are filled.

2022 Summer Youth Employment Program Now Accepting Applications

Today the 2022 Summer Youth Employment Program started accepting applications from DC residents ages 14-24. The program is set to serve 14,000 this year, so be sure to share the application with the young people in your life who need a job for the summer! The program will run from June 27 through August 5, and there are both virtual and in-person options within the program.  

Applications will be accepted until Monday, February 28.
