Free Training. National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP), Columbia Climate School, at Columbia University

At the time of this newsletter, 2022 has proven to be another billion-dollar year of weather and climate disasters affecting the United States. And 2023 is starting with high rainfall and flooding in Los Angeles County, Orange County, Santa Barbara County, and other southern counties in California. At NCDP, we know communities are impacted long after the disaster ends.

In 2022, there were 18 weather and climate disaster events, with losses exceeding $1 billion with 474 deaths.Major disasters included:

·    One winter storm/cold wave event (across the central and eastern U.S.)

·    One wildfire event (wildfires across the western U.S., including Alaska)

·    One drought and heat wave event (across the western and central U.S.)

·    One flooding event (in Missouri and Kentucky)

·    Two tornado outbreaks (across the southern and southeastern U.S.)

·    Three tropical hurricanes (Fiona, Ian, and Nicole)

·    Nine severe weather/hail events (across many parts of the country, including a derecho in the central U.S.)

Some additional disaster challenges of 2022 included the fifth-warmest calendar year on record for Florida and Rhode Island. An above destructive hurricane season with 14 named storms, Hurricane Fiona brought 12-18 inches of rain to Puerto Rico, Hurricane Ian brought 150 mph sustained winds to Florida along with flooding, and Hurricane Nicole made landfall in Florida, causing thousands of people to lose power. There were 1,332 tornadoes reported, and in March of 2022, the most tornadoes were recorded in the 1950-2022 record. In the West and Alaska, wildfires were widespread, causing destruction, and in Alaska, over 1.185 million acres were burned, which is the second-highest on record.

Disaster events impact communities large and small.

To assist communities in preparing for and returning from these catastrophic disasters, the National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP), Columbia Climate School, at Columbia University has created training programs focused on post-disaster economic and housing recovery, mass care, and pandemic planning.

These programs are funded through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants.

USDA Releases Nationwide Farmer, Rancher and Forest Manager
Prospective Customer Survey

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a nationwide feedback survey targeting farmers, ranchers, and forest managers. USDA hopes to reach a new audience of prospective customers specifically, those who don’t know about us or have yet to work with us, and those who were unable to participate in the past. Existing USDA customers can also take the survey and provide
valuable feedback.

This vital data collection will assist USDA’s agencies that deliver farm programs, including the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Risk Management Agency (RMA) in learning about way to enhance support and improve programs and services, increase access and advance equity for new and existing customers.

We Need Your Help.

This toolkit is meant for FSA, NRCS and RMA partners and stakeholder groups to easily share and promote information in their networks about the nationwide survey. By sharing the survey in your networks, your vital contribution is aiding government in helping the people that grow our Nation’s food, fiber and fuel. It includes:

Key messages
• Sample email from stakeholder organization to network
• Sample stakeholder organization newsletter article
• Sample stakeholder organization social media posts
• Survey outreach poster to print, post and share

If you have any questions, please contact us at FPAC.BC.Press@usda.gov .

Key Messages
• USDA want all farmers, ranchers and forest managers to take the survey; we hope to specifically hear from prospective customers, so we can learn about their interests and experiences to improve our services and make government agricultural programs more accessible, equitable and easier to use.

• This survey will provide USDA with critical data to inform how we can best meet America’s agricultural needs, now and in the future. Responding to this survey will directly enhance customer experience at FSA, NRCS and RMA. These agencies support farmers, ranchers and forest managers to protect and enhance the natural resources vital to our nation.

Take the survey at...Please visit www.farmers.gov/survey or scan the QR code to the left by March 31, 2023, to access the survey  online in multiple languages! The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and responses are anonymous.

Recommendations for the 2023 Farm Bill January 16, 2023

Recommendations for the 2023 Farm Bill

NM Healthy Soil's Recommendations for the 2023 Farm Bill, reflecting the collective input shared at several listening sessions:

We are at a make or break moment in history, determining whether we marshal the resources to safeguard the life sustaining capacities of our planet or perpetuate systems in place that are harming the land, human health and the stability of the climate.

We have a remarkable chance right now to set our nation on a course that is restorative and life affirming.

The 2023 Farm Bill is very consequential legislation which
  • impacts nutrition and
  • land management,
  • affecting what we eat,
  • how we grow food and the very
  • make up of our food system as a nation.

We all must decide: do we want a Farm Bill that embraces and fosters life or one that perpetuates our self destruction?

Continuing the status quo and supporting a healthy future for agriculture are not mutually inclusive positions.

We can no longer subsidize the perpetuation of industrial agriculture, which generates intolerable pollution, inequities, insufficient profit to producers and instability in the global food system (during pandemics and/or times of war, inflation and other price or market manipulations).

Rather we must fully invest in the transition to regenerative agriculture and the advancement of soil health.

Regenerative agriculture minimizes pollution by working with nature rather than against it, it honors farmers and ranchers by taking out the middleman and fostering more just earnings and access as well as strengthening the local food system.

Regenerative agriculture prioritizes healthy soil which is key to life flourishing on earth.
